1. About Peru
Population
Peru has more than 27 million inhabitants, of which a third lives in the capital: Lima.
Half of the population lives on the coast, which represents only 10% of the country
surface.
 
Geography
Peru is crossed from the North to the South by a mountain chain (the Andes), whose
highest top exceeds 6,000 meters.
 
Climate
In the Andes and in the Amazon Forest, the rainy season lasts from December to
April; the dry period is from June to September. In the Andes, the days are sunny
and pleasant (18 to 20 ºC) but the nights are cold. On the coast, it almost never rains
all year round.
 
Political situation
Peru is a democratic republic.
 
3. Health care
Immunizations & Vaccines
Check with your doctor about immunizations needed. If you are not visiting the
jungle or the far north you will not need to worry about malaria or yellow fever.
Hepatitis and typhoid, however, should be considered.
 
Andean afflictions
The most common problem that travellers encounter in the Andes is altitude
sickness. In order to mitigate or avoid the effects of altitude sickness:
 
point Try to eat light, starchy food and avoid eating a lot – especially salty or fatty foods
point Keep hydrated – drink plenty of water and/or hot drinks
point Keep up your sugar levels with sugar or sweets
point Get plenty of rest and try to avoid strenuous activity .
point Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol
point Keep warm
 
Sunburns
Sunburn can also be a problem as skin can burn much quicker in the thinner air. We
recommend bringing sunscreen and a hat for the sun. Lips also tend to become dry
and chapped at altitude so lip balm will prove useful.
 
First Aid
Each of the communities and buses whom we work are equipped with a First Aid Kit.
 
Fitness
The tours are not strenuous but do require a basic level of fitness since there will be
a degree of walking on parts of the trip. As we will be at altitude, all physical exercise
will be harder.
