1. What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is an organized social and commercial
movement aiming to offer better trading conditions to
marginalized groups of farmers, workers, and artisans in
developing countries.

Fair Trade is regulated by several non-profit
organizations such as IFAT, FTF, TransFair Canada,
TransFair USA, and FLO. These organizations carry out
continuous monitoring activities to ensure the principles
of Fair Trade
are upheld.

2. The main principles of Fair Trade

(Note: The following list is not comprehensive. It has
been streamlined for simplicity).

1. Payment of a fair price
A fair price in the local context is one that has been
agreed upon through dialogue and participation. Fair
Trade supports producers by ensuring access to pre-
harvest or pre-production financing.
2. Long-term trade relations
Fair Trade organizations maintain long-term
relationships based on solidarity, trust, and mutual
respect.
3. Good working conditions
Fair Trade means a safe and healthy working
environment for all workers, producers, and artisans.
4. Gender Equity
Fair Trade means that women's work is properly valued
and rewarded.
5. Concern for the environment
Fair Trade actively encourages better environmental
practices and the application of responsible production
methods.

3. How is Fair Trade is regulated?

First of all, we should remember that the Fair Trade
movement is regulated by several non-profit
organizations
. These regulating organizations are
responsible for monitoring and/or certifying the application
of Fair Trade principles throughout stages of the
production and marketing process.

Some of these regulating organizations focus on crop
and food items, while others focus on handicrafts
.
Their monitoring activities may differ from one organization to
another. For example, FLO and TransFair aim to certify
products (not organizations), so they authorize the use of
their logo on product labels.

On the other hand, regulating organizations in the
handicraft sector such as IFAT and FTF aim to qualify
producers or businesses as “Fair Trade Organizations”.

4. Fair Trade regulating organizations
